Lake Titicaca and Amazon River top 7 Wonders of Nature contest

Lake Titicaca and Amazon Rainforest/River top their respective groups in the New Seven Wonders of Nature contest, just one day away from the closure of the voting campaign.
Lake Titicaca continues to lead Group F (lakes, rivers and waterfalls) and the Amazon River and Rainforest took first place in Group E, (Forests, National Parks and Nature Reserves).
Likewise, the Colca Canyon, located in Arequipa, ranks second in Group D, which includes caves, rock formations and valleys.
On July 7, 2009 the voting campaign will end to choose the 28 finalists of the contest which will be announced on July 21st by the organizers after the verification of the votes. Lake Titicaca, whose nomination is promoted by Peruvian and Bolivian authorities, is still at the top of its group since May 19th and has become the main South American nominee.
Meanwhile, the Amazon River is supported by authorities from Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Suriname, Peru and Venezuela.
