About 40,000 restaurants open monthly in Peru

Some 40,000 restaurants of all kind, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, open monthly in Peru, especially in tourist areas, reported today Lima's Chamber of Commerce (CCL).
“One of the biggest factors that motivates people to invest in this area is the big peak of the Peruvian gastronomy and the recognition it has worldwide,” said the President of the Subcommittee of Gastronomy of the CCL, Nicolai Stakeeff.

He said that more and more restaurants open because there are more tourists that come to the country interested in tasting the Peruvian cousin, besides Peruvians that go more frequently to these restaurants to enjoy a good meal.

He said that the tourist regions where constantly new restaurants are opened are Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, Puno, Lambayeque, La Libertad and Piura among others.

However, he said that from the total of restaurants opened month after month, almost a 50% close before the first 3 months, since there is no knowledge of what means the responsibility of offering a true food service.

He said that to open a luxury restaurant in Peru, an investment of around $500,000 is needed, and to open an average restaurant are needed $40,000 approximately.

Some luxury restaurants in Peru are Kala, La Casa Moreyra, La Rosa Náutica, Las Brujas del Cachiche and El Señorío de Sulco, among others.

In addition, some average restaurants are El Mordisco, Punto Azul, Rodrigo, Malabar, Bravo Restobar and any other restaurant that belongs to the Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio.

Caral ancient city added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List

Peru's Sacred City of Caral-Supe, the oldest centre of civilization in the Americas, was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee, chaired by María Jesús San Segundo, the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Spain to UNESCO.
The 5000-year-old 626-hectare archaeological site of The Sacred City of Caral-Supe is situated on a dry desert terrace overlooking the green valley of the Supe river.

It dates back to the Late Archaic Period of the Central Andes and is the oldest centre of civilization in the Americas. Exceptionally well-preserved, the site is impressive in terms of its design and the complexity of its architectural, especially its monumental stone and earthen platform mounts and sunken circular courts.

One of 18 urban settlements situated in the same area, Caral features complex and monumental architecture, including six large pyramidal structures. A quipu (the knot system used in Andean civilizations to record information) found on the site testifies to the development and complexity of Caral society.

The city’s plan and some of its components, including pyramidal structures and residence of the elite, show clear evidence of ceremonial functions, signifying a powerful religious ideology.

The Committee also added the historic centre of the town of Levoca to the Slovak World Heritage site of Spišský Hrad inscribed on the List in 1993. The extended site is to be known as Levoca, Spišský and the Associated Cultural Monument.

The extended site in Slovakia now features the addition of the historic town-centre of Levoca founded in the 13th and 14th centuries within fortifications. Most of the site has been preserved and it includes the 14th century church of St James with its ten alters of the 15th and 16th centuries, a remarkable collection of polychrome works in the Late Gothic style, including an 18.6 metre high alterpiece by completed around 1510 by Master Paul.

Thousands of people witness Inti Raymi in Cusco

Thousands of tourists and local people attended the staging of the Inti Raimy or Festival of the Sun, whose first ceremony took place at the Santo Domingo Qoricancha Covent with the greeting to the Father Sun or Inti Tayta.

The Inti Raymi is considered as the most solemn and grandiose festivity of the Inca era.
The Inca, along with principal members of his court and the Huillac Uma (Main Priest), performed a ritual of greeting to the Inti Tayta (Father Sun) at the Qoricancha esplanade, where the rests of the famous Inca temple dedicated to the Sun are located.

Afterwards, the Inca, escorted by all his entourage, moved to the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, where this festivity was originally performed and where the Cusco's Cathedral is located, this last one built on the temple dedicated to the god Wiracocha or universal god for the Andean culture.

That’s where the dubbed “Encuentro de los tiempos”( Encounter of the times) took place, act where the Inca talked with the major of the city and offered a speech to the people of Cusco and its authorities.

In these moments, the Inca accompanied by his Coya (queen), his royal entourage and his imperial army goes to the Archeological Park of Sacsayhuaman for the central ceremony of Inti Raymi.

The Inti Raymi ("Festival of the Sun") is a religious ceremony of the Inca Empire in honor of the god Inti (Sun). It also marked the winter solstice and a new year in the Andes of the Southern Hemisphere.
