Peru among world’s best countries to visit

Adventurers about to volunteer abroad in Vietnam or take a gap year in Peru or Africa may be pleased to learn that they are among the world’s top countries to visit.
This is according to the readers of tourism magazine Wanderlust, who voted Namibia as the second best country in the world.
The Wanderlust Travel Awards 2009 also placed New Zealand as the world’s third greatest location, while Peru came sixth with 95 per cent of the vote.
Vietnam placed eight and Indonesia ninth, but the top spot was claimed by the land of geisha, pioneering technology and culinary delights – Japan.

Discovery Channel launches adventure tours to Peru

Discovery Channel is launching a new brand of tours and trips called Discovery Adventures and Peru has been included in its hot destination list highlighting its Inca Ruins of Machu Picchu and the mighty Amazon River.
Tour prices range from 3,000 to 800 dollars per adult international airfares not included, and last from 15 to 5 days, while departures start in December this year. The 15-day trip called "Amazon and Inca Adventure" includes visits to Lima, Iquitos, Amazon Jungle, Puno, Lake Titicaca, Cuzco, Sacred Valley, Deluxe Inca Trail, and Machu Picchu. In its website, Discovery Adventures invites tourists to "explore the best of Peru, from the ancient Inca ruins of Cuzco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu to the natural wonders of the Amazon Jungle". "Take a boat tour of Taquile and Uros Islands and discover the fascinating culture of the people of Lake Titicaca. The prize adventure begins as you embark on a 4-day Inca Trail hike through incredible nature to the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu", it added.The brand also offers trips to destinations including Mexico, Costa Rica, the Amazon, the Galapagos, India, Thailand, Cambodia, China, South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Alaska and the U.S. Southwest. Itineraries will range from cruises and safaris to exploring the ancient civilizations of the Incas, the Egyptians and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Associated Press reported.
Tour themes will tie in with places featured on Discovery Channel programs like Man V. Wild, Out of Egypt, Discovery Atlas, Dirty Jobs and Into the Unknown with Josh Bernstein. Tourists will have opportunities to explore ruins and historic sites, as well as to do volunteer work in the destinations and experience local cultures.
Departures begin in December. The trips will run from three to 24 days and are being offered in partnership with the tour company G.A.P. Adventures.
Prices start at $2,000 per person, plus airfare, with the price covering lodging, breakfast and some other amenities. Groups will be small, just six to 15 people depending on the destination, with all trips suitable for families.

Tour package sales could reach additional US$ 17 million in next 12 months

The National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) said Sunday that tour package sales in Peru may increase by US$ 17 million in the next twelve months, thanks to promotional campaigns launched by tour operators at Peru Travel Mart 2009.
Canatur's chairman Fernando Puga said that from June 2009 to July 2010 there will a significant increase in the number of tour operators promoting Peru in overseas markets.
“Those who sold "Peru Destination" until the first half of 2009 generated a tourist flow of 5,518 people, totaling US$ 6’739,348. However, the new sellers may generate an additional flow of 7,800 people; which would bring US$ 10’186,800 more,” he told Andina.It should be noted that in 2008, more than 2 million tourists arrived to Peru, 14 percent more compared to 2007. Most visitors came from Chile and the United States.
According to estimates for 2009 made by Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), tourism to Peru may grow up to 4 percent.
In this regard, Puga added that Peru's most promoted tourist destinations are Cusco, Lima, Machu Picchu, Iquitos, the Sacred Valley, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Nazca, Puno, Paracas, Cajamarca, Ica, Chiclayo, Amazonas and Trujillo.

Arequipa expects to welcome over 25,000 tourists in August 2009

Arequipa prepares to welcome over 25,000 tourists in August, its anniversary month, when visitors will participate in different programmed activities, as well as know its tourist attractions, reported the regional government.
Rocio Cervantes, regional manager of Foreign Trade and Tourism, said that during the anniversary of the white city the tourist inflow increases on increasing interest of the visitors to participate in festivities.
Many cultural and artistic activities are programmed in that month, such as serenades, parades, parade floats, among others.
“Last year we received 25,000 tourists, this year we expect the number to increase, that is why we are working in coordination with other institutions linked to the sector,” she said.
Many tourist promotion plans are being developed in the coming months targeting local people, so they can know more about their province.

Colca Valley tourism grew by 9% in Jan-May period

Tourist arrivals to Colca Valley in Arequipa increased by 9 percent during the first five months of the year compared to the same period in 2008, the Head of Autonomous Authority of Colca (Autocolca) Jose Luis Talavera said Wednesday.
He said that over 48,000 visitors arrived to Colca Canyon from January to May 2009; 39,000 of whom were foreign tourists and 9,000 were nationals.

Talavera added that despite the international crisis, tourist arrivals to Colca have increased thanks to a series of promotional campaigns aimed at supporting this area in the New Seven Wonders of Nature online voting competition.As part of another promotional campaign, Talavera presented on Wednesday the 'traveling bus' equipped with 14 computers. This vehicle, provided by the National University of St. Augustin of Arequipa (UNSA), will tour different districts around Arequipa to encourage people to vote for Colca Canyon.
The Colca Canyon, located in the Arequipa province of Caylloma, moved up one place to second in Group D, which includes caves, rock formations and valleys.

Puno authorities launch Aymara tourism route

Authorities in the Andean region of Puno, southeastern Peru, has launched a tourism route aimed at becoming one of the most popular in the Altiplano area, which has Lake Titicaca as its main attraction.
Local tourism police chief Edgar Saavedra said that this route dubbed Aymara (an ancient culture that flourished in Puno) includes the towns of Acora, Chucuito and Plateria, among others near the border with Bolivia.

“This route was almost closed. Tourists used to take the Quechua route to visit Taquile and Los Uros Islands, but now they have other option,” he said.
He pointed out that visitors can arrive in Acora from the port of Amantani Island, and from there, they can take the road to enjoy community-based tourism or adventure tourism like riding a bike or a motorcycle.
“This route has areas such as Charcas, a beautiful white sand beach. In Acora and Plateria we can experience community based tourism, sharing traditional activities with local people,” he added.
“Peru is a tourism destination and Puno is not the exception. Tourism Police will provide security for both domestic and foreign tourists,” he said.

Cusco: Touristic circuit Valle Sur to be promoted to increase attractions

The touristic circuit Valle Sur (South Valley) of Cusco, which covers around 20 km, will be promoted in order to increase the offer of attractions to visit in this department. To this end, five touristic development plans are being prepared to promote other destinations in the department, which include touristic development in the Espinar region with the Suicutambo canyon, the Calca development plan, which is home to Pisac, the largest artisan market in the country, and the promotion of Paucartambo as a natural balcony from which the sunrise can be viewed.

The fourth plan covers the Canchis region, which houses the temple to the god Wiracocha, which is projected to be promoted along with the region’s hot springs. Finally, the fifth plan refers to the region of Quispicanchi, Ollantaytambo, Vilcabamba and the Capac Nan, or Camino Inca project, and will work with the INC

Kuelap as impressive as Machu Picchu

While most people know about the Incas and Machu Picchu, relatively few have heard of the Chachapoya civilization or visited their domains, a swath of Amazon headlands and breathtaking cloud forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes. Kuelap, an impressive pre-Inca fortress, located in Peru’s northern Amazonas Department, is slowly uncovering its secrets and showing its majesty –rivaling Machu Picchu in scale and grandeur.


Kuelap –meaning “cold place” in the native language-- is located at four hours drive from Chiclayo (Lambayeque) at an altitude of 2945 meters above sea level (9,500 feet) on the misty realm of the cloud forest, between the towering Andean peaks and low lying Amazon plains, on the left bank of the Utcubamba River. Archaeologists working on this site have estimated that it was a stronghold of the Chachapoyas culture, sheltering up to 4,000 people, as they have found scores of skeletons and thousands of artifacts, shedding new light on one of the most remarkable and least understood of Peru’s pre-Columbian advanced civilizations.

This ancient citadel, dating back to the 8th Century, remained hidden from the outside world until 1843; it is gigantic, with over 400 million square feet of construction, three times the volume of Egypt’s Great Pyramid. The circular stone defense walls that surround it are over 20 meters (64 feet) high and have gargoyle-like stone carvings and stone missiles to repel invaders. It is believed that the inhabitants of Kuelap abandoned their city shortly before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors to the shores of Perú.
