The Inti Raymi festival in Peru honors the sun

Inti Raymi, one of the largest festivals in the Americas, celebrates Inca traditions in honor of Inti – the Inca Sun God. The Inca celebrations take place during the winter solstice, in a rite to make the sun god return. Today, thousands of people from all over the world gather in Cuzco for a week-long celebration marking the beginning of the New Year.
The main event of the festival takes place on June 24, with an all-day ceremony, that takes place at the ancient fortress of Sacsayhuaman, in the hills above Cuzco. Stands are built so that visitors –about 100,000 on this day- can be comfortably seated to observe the ceremonies that can last up to five hours. Entry to the fortress is free, and rental chairs are available from booths around the main square.
